Your credit rating is a score based on the information on your credit report. Most credit providers use computers to determine whether or not you get approved and/or your interest rate.
As of 12th March 2014 Australia moved to a comprehensive credit reporting system, with some significant changes compared to the previous negative system. Information that credit providers are able to see includes:
- Date account was opened
- Account limit
- Nature of the credit
- Repayment History Information, dated back to December 2012
- Date account was closed
Credit providers can reject you even if you only have one black mark, regardless if it is paid or not.
In addition to determining whether or not you get approved, your credit rating can also dictate the interest rate you pay and the fees that your bank or financial institution charges you. Therefore by improving your credit rating you are able to save thousands in interest.
